Hello folks and welcome to Player’s Pub Sucks!
This site is about a local pub that I used to hang out at in Forest Grove, OR
since around August of 2010. That is until 04/14/2011 I was 86′d
for complaining about bad service that happened the previous week and
then tipping another bartender whom I considered a friend very well for
her excellent service the night after the incident. The bartender,
Jessica, who gave me
bad service just so happened to be in the bar at the time I gave the
large tip and it apparently offended her. The pub is known as Player’s Pub and is located next to Godfather’s Pizza in the Safeway parking lot.
Now, those who have met me at Player’s Pub
would know that I am a very nice person and often very quiet unless I
am addressed. Friends have described me as being “The quietest
person in the bar” or Norm from the popular TV sitcoms Cheers and Frasier.
That’s all fine and dandy with me, I am a quiet person who doesn’t like
the drama that goes with visiting a bar yet I still like to go and have
an occasional drink and watch sports. I also didn’t mind being
called Norm because I happen to love both Cheers and Frasier and enjoyed watching these shows with my father (RIP) when I went to visit. George Wendt played Norm very well.
The incident in which I received bad service occurred on
04/08/2011. I came into the establishment and ordered a hamburger
with fries. I received my order but instead of fries I received
chips. No big deal, I will just ask Jessica
to get me some fries. She gives me a dirty look and acts like she
doesn’t care. I then proceed to pick up my burger and noticed the
burger is COLD. I ask Jessica
to take it away and redo my order. Again I get a dirty look but
she takes the burger away. About 30 minutes or so passed and the
General Manager of Player’s Pub, Roger D....., appears with my new burger again with CHIPS. I explained to him that I ordered FRIES. Roger
walks away saying he will go make some fries. The burger was made
right this time so I ask Jessica for some napkins and ketchup. Jessica
walks over to me and slams the ketchup down on the bar and throws the
napkins down then walks away. About a half an hour later, Roger reappears with my fries, after my burger was gone.
So 5:00 rolls around and it’s time for Jessica to end her shift. Her relief, Rachael
arrives for her shift and I ask her to close out my tab. I hand
her a $2.00 tip for doing nothing but closing my tab because again I am a
nice guy. Rachael proceeded to tell me that she’d give Jessica the tip and I said “No, that is for you” and explained the situation that occurred and how I didn’t like Jessica. Rachael
grinned and gave me this look of surprise like I shouldn’t have the
right to complain about bad service. I walk out and head off to
another bar where another friend of mine worked at to watch the Portland Trailblazers beat the Los Angeles Lakers. About an hour and a half later, I get a phone call from Rachael at Player’s Pub
stating that my name was drawn in a raffle for some Lexus Club Level
Blazer Tickets and that if I wasn’t there in 15 minutes she was going to
draw another name. I quickly call her back and explain that I am
at another bar and it’s going to take me a little while to get
there. I asked her when she was closing and she said at
Midnight. I told her I was on my way and to please hold the
tickets for me. I arrive shortly after 11:00 and claim my
prize. I stayed and had a couple drinks to celebrate my win and I
gave her a nice tip, I think it was $7.00 but I don’t remember the exact
amount then I had her call me a cab to take me home.
The following night, 04/09/2010, I am enjoying an evening at Player’s Pub with one of my friends and favorite bartenders, Kris. Now Kris has only been working at Player’s Pub
for just a few months but she knows how to make drinks the way I like
them and her amazing personality just rubs off on everyone in the bar
and can be used as an example of how all bartenders should treat their
customers. So it would make perfect sense that I tip her well for
her excellent service and also prefer to come in when she is
working. Why would I want to go into an establishment to give them
my business and my money knowing an employee who was rude to me is
working that day? Moving on with the story, So I am enjoying my
drinks and good conversation with Kris when Jessica and her friend Steve, both bartenders at Player’s Pub
walk in and sit at the bar next to me. There was some discussion
about her tips not being as much that night and I made a comment about
how I tip well and Kris agreed. Upon hearing this, Jessica gave me a dirty look and started making comments to me asking why I said that. I explained to Jessica
that I tip well when I am treated well and that I understood that she
was new and in time she will learn how to take care of her
customers. I also explained to her about the situation the
previous day where she was rude to me and that I didn’t like her.
At least I said it to her face and not behind her back like a lot of
people do. I was being an honest consumer and giving feedback
about my experience. Jessica proceeded to whisper something into Steve’s ear then Steve
made some comment about how “That guy needs to laugh more” while
looking over at me. So to prove a point on how well I tip for
great service, I give Kris a $20 and Jessica didn’t like that. I then walk outside to puff on my Blu Electronic Cigarette and to talk to Kris since what was once okay in the bar now isn’t because apparently Player’s Pub
was getting complaints about it. Perhaps people were just
visually offended by it because it’s completely harmless to use indoors
and doesn’t contain all the chemicals, second hand smoke or smell that
an analog cigarette contains. Whenever I used it in the bar,
nobody ever complained to me but I did get many people who walked up
asking me what it is and does it really work. They really thought
it was cool and I have several convinced to try them so I gave them a
demo and the info on how to order them. Maybe Blu should pay me for promoting their product. Anyways, so I am outside with Kris when Jessica
walks out to have a cigarette, curious about my electronic one she
asked to try a puff so I let her. Yes, you heard me right, I let
her try my electronic cigarette even after our little argument in the
bar just moments earlier. Why you might ask? Because she
asked me nicely and I reciprocated with kindness. It’s a simple
concept really. Treat me well and I will treat you well.
It’s not rocket science people. Just like the ethic of reciprocity also known as “The Golden Rule” goes. “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself”.
So I walk back into the bar and enjoy a few more drinks before closing out my $42.00 tab and giving Kris another $20 bill before departing for the night. That’s right, I gave Kris
a $40 total tip that night. Excessive? perhaps but if you
consider the amount of time I spend in the bar and count that as time
that the bartender is constantly making conversation with me and
checking on me making sure I am okay or if I need anything then I would
say my tip was appropriate. I polled several other bartenders in
the area and they didn’t think it was unusual and even asked me to come
to their bar.
So for the next few days I came in only on the days Kris worked and I did this for several reasons. 1) Kris is a friend. 2) Kris
is an outstanding bartender with amazing customer service skills which
is expected for a communications major. I am glad to see her
education is paying off and she is certainly putting it to use. Kris,
keep up the excellent work and I know you will excel in everything that
you do. 3) There are other patrons that I enjoy talking to that
come in during the day on Kris’s shift.
So now this brings us to Yesterday, 04/14/2011. I decide to head down to Player’s Pub to have a couple beers. It was about 4:30 when I arrived and Rachael
had already started her day. We greeted each other and as I
walked up to the bar I could sense something wasn’t right. That’s
when Rachael asked to speak to me in private and and pulled me aside over to the Godfather’s Pizza
side to tell me that they had a meeting about me and decided to 86 me
from the bar for a month. Confused, I asked why and she explained
that I was causing problems for the other bartenders by “Prioritizing”
when I came in depending on who was working and that I was making it
difficult for the other bartenders to work together. Now how is it
my problem that others can’t work well with each other? I don’t
work there, I didn’t cause the conflict. I am just a
customer. She also accused me of trying to start a fight in the
bar on Saturday 04/09/2011 which is completely false. People who
know me well would know that I am non-violent and I most certainly would
never pick a fight in a bar. In fact, I can’t even remember the
last fight I was involved in because they rarely if ever happen at
all. Lastly, she mentioned she was at another bar in Beaverton, OR
where my other friend who used to work at Player’s Pub now works and said my friend told her I was saying bad things about the bartender’s at Player’s Pub. I find that humorous considering that my friend doesn’t even like Rachael and she was one of the reasons she left Player’s Pub so it makes absolutely no sense that my friend would tell Rachael anything about me. I expressed my frustration to Rachael and told her this was a big mistake and I asked for the manager, Roger D....... who had apparently left for the day. I told Rachael
I can spend my money with whomever or however I want and I can also tip
any amount I want. She responded by saying “For the next month
you can do that somewhere else and told me there were 11 other bars in
Forest Grove.” I told her they have lost a customer for life
because of this and she didn’t seem to care.
I walked out of the restaurant and proceeded to call the number on
the card she gave me to try and talk to the manager. Turns out the
number on the card was the number to the restaurant I just left and I
ended up speaking to his daughter, Georgianna who is also a manager. Georgianna
was very rude on the phone and told me she wasn’t going to do this on
the phone. Even more frustrated, I hung up on her. I then
text my friend who works at the Beaverton, OR bar and ask if she did say
anything bad about me and she replied that she did not. I still
have those text messages.
So there you have it folks. This is my transcript of the events that happened over the last week at Player’s Pub.
The only pub in town where you get 86′d for tipping well and having a
preferred bartender. Thanks for the Blazer tickets, I sure had to
come in a lot during those Blazer games and spend a lot of money on
drinks to get enough raffle tickets to win the drawing. This is
how you thank me for my continued patronage. This just shows
that even the best of intentions can have bad outcomes.
